This old North Country pattern was originally invented by the famous North Country angler John Lee of Teeside. It was included in several Cummins tackle and fly cataloques and later made popular by the Richard Clapham in several of his books detailing fishing northern rivers and streams.
I have found it useful on the top dropper of a three fly cast. This great little fly was featured in my series of articles in Fly Fishing and Fly Tying magazine about the "Lost Flies of the Yorkshire Dales"
