A fly pattern of my own design, which was initially devised for both trout and grayling which are found smutting on the surface. On a particularly breezy day on the Upper River Wharfe around Kettlewell, I noticed lots of windblown terrestrials on the water’s surface; these were augmented with small black needle flies that were also periodically hatching. I realised then the need for a general nondescript pattern that would have some of the key trigger points associated with both terrestrials and the hatching needle flies. And so this is the pattern that I came up with.

It has a slim peacock herl body which is ribbed through with fine black thread to give the fly a subtle segmentation. The CDC wing which is tied in first is then pulled back over body to give the fly a nice flat winged profile.

A simple yet very effective little pattern that successfully brings both trout and grayling to the net those difficult days.
